Question

How to make local posgreSQL database publicly accessible?

Im trying to set up a continuous migration for a managed postgres database. I have the database on my local device and I want to migrate it. I follow along the “How-to” in the postgres section but in order to migrate I need to make my database publicly accessible and I do not understand how to do that. I tried looking up at tutorials and web sources but that did not help. I also dont understand if there are any dangers in making my database public and how to set up the migration to be secure. Any advice is going to greatly help me, thank you!

Hi there,

What I could suggest is rather than opening a port on your local network for the public internet, which could be a large security problem, you could use pg_dump to create an export of your database and then import that dump file to your managed Postgres instance.

You can follow the steps here on how to use pg_dump to export your database:

https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/databases/postgresql/how-to/import-databases/#export-an-existing-database

And then once you’ve got the dump file, you can follow the steps here on how to import it to your DigitalOcean managed Postgres cluster here:

https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/databases/postgresql/how-to/import-databases/#import-a-database

Hope that this helps! Let me know how it goes!

Best,

Bobby
