Question

Mastodon instance - HTTPS points to Mastodon, without it points to NGINX

Hi,

I just installed a Mastodon droplet and got an IP adress of it. If I type in that IP adress it opens NGNIX, if I put https:// in front of it, I get Mastodon (and I want mastodon). It says the connection is unsecure. Do I have to do something with cerfiticates or I’ve done something else wrong.

Also, I purchased my domain at onlydomains. When I try to configure the DNS, I put domain names (ns#.digitalocean.com) and IP but after confirmation nothing changes (maybe I have to wait?)

all the best Vedran

Hi there,

Yes, once you make the DNS change it might take up to 24/48 hours for the DNS to propagate over the Globe.

Did you configure your domain name on your first SSH login?

If you have not made any changes to your instance yet, what I could suggest is to follow the instructions from the setup page:

On your first SSH login to the droplet, you will be greeted by a setup wizard that will create a working Mastodon server. Going in, you need to be prepared to enter the following information:

  • Domain name (the DNS records should already point to the droplet)
  • SMTP credentials for sending e-mails (this can be SparkPost, Sendgrid, Mailgun, etc)

Let me know how it goes. Best, Bobby
