Question

Django execute operation on an interval

Hello Community!

I have a Django app and I need to execute a certain operation from time to time. I now have a cronjob that does it for me but it seems like it’s not the proper way to go. One thing that concerns me is that if I change the Droplet then the cronjob will disappear.

Heya @brendros,

It’s not that uncommon to use cronjobs for certain operations however I understand how you feel. Having said that, there are more scalable and robust alternatives for managing periodic operations in a Django app.

  1. Celery with a Message Broker

Celery is a popular task queue for Django that allows you to schedule and execute asynchronous tasks.

  1. Use Django-Q for Task Scheduling

Django-Q is an alternative to Celery for handling task queues and scheduling. It’s simpler to set up

  1. Use an External Scheduler

If you prefer not to rely on in-app solutions, you can use external task schedulers like DigitalOcean Functions to trigger an endpoint in your Django app

If you are looking for portability and scalability, Celery with Redis and Celery Beat is the best option. It ensures that task scheduling and execution are robust and survive server migrations. Additionally, you can easily monitor and debug tasks.

Okay, how do I use the Celery? How to create that cronjob
