Question

Droplet network speed

Hello, new DO user here and very impressed so far.

I wanted a bit of clarification on what network speed my Droplets should be getting.

I’m using Basic Premium AMD droplets which as I understand are not CPU-optimised, they’re just newer-class CPUs.

This doc page says that all droplets are limited to 2Gbps maximum but CPU-optimised droplets with premium CPUs get 10Gbps.

Yet one of my droplets is downloading a 1GB file in 1 second, average 850-900MB/s which translates to around 7Gbps.

I tested on a VM I have with another provider who list their speed as 400Mbps. The same 1GB file downloads at 47-48MB/s which calculates to around 385Mbps, so I’m confident my calculations are correct.

So my question really is, is my Basic Premium droplet CPU-optimised and getting 10Gbps, or am I getting something I shouldn’t be?

Heya,

That’s alright, while according to the documentation, the Droplet’s network speed is 2Gbps maximum, more often than not as you’ve described it is closer to 10Gbps rather than anything else.

There is no need to worry about it

I guess you are n the 10GB plan with any premium CPU “- Droplets with Premium CPUs have a network throughput limit of 10 Gbps. All other Droplets have a maximum network throughput limit of 2 Gbps.” 10GPS is the theoretical output of the ethernet card, so 7GBps is really good
