Question

How long does updating name servers in Google Domains take to work

I updated my name servers in Google Domains to point to: ns1.digitalocean.com ns2.digitalocean.com ns3.digitalocean.com

If I hit my domain, I get the following error: This site can’t be reached homebrewproject.com’s server IP address could not be found

ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED

I know it says it takes time to go into effect, but is there a way to know if it’s actually in progress vs I messed something up? I can’t really afford days of downtime just to find out that there’s some error and the request never was processed…

Here’s a screenshot of the settings in google domains https://drive.google.com/file/d/11eUOOiagCWyEQYqpVknXA6keKhUoqaWU/view?usp=sharing

Here’s a screenshot of my droplet domain info https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Jv-Oaar0STJddopMDWN_UyOg9RO4RLIW/view?usp=sharing

Did I mess something up or have I just not waited long enough?

Hello, @srenert

The DNS can take up to 48 hours in order to fully updated. This happens due to ISP DNS cache and from the DNS propagation itself. It usually happens a lot faster than that, but it will still take a few hours in order the DNS to update.

Looking at the propagation your NS records are still updating. You can monitor the process using any DNS checker website like this one:

https://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS

Just enter your domain name select NS and then you will see the DNS propagation around the world points this site is using.

At the moment your A record is not propagating which makes me thinking that it’s not properly configured. Can you please double check the A record configuration in your DigitalOcean control panel?

The A record of your domain name need to be pointed to the IP address of your droplet. At the moment it seems like you haven’t configured this so please make sure to create a record for this.

You can also check our official documentation about DNS Management:

https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/networking/dns/how-to/manage-records/

This part is for the A records - https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/networking/dns/how-to/manage-records/#a-records

Hope this helps!

Regards, Alex
